The Gujarat Scotland MoU was signed in Gandhinagar on Friday, 23 October, in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney. The agreement commits the state government and the Scottish government to work together in renewable energy, trade and investment, education, research, sports and sustainable development, DeshGujarat reported.

What the Gujarat Scotland MoU covers

The agreement lists several areas of cooperation. These include partnerships between businesses, universities and research institutions; academic exchanges between colleges; skill development; and links in heritage, culture and the creative industries. It also aims to build people-to-people ties and the exchange of best practices.

Sports is a key part of the deal. Gujarat is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, while Scotland hosted the 2026 Games in Glasgow. Both sides see room to cooperate on sports infrastructure, event management and the promotion of fitness.

What the leaders said

Swinney said he was confident the agreement would open new avenues in culture, sports, renewable energy and life sciences. He pointed to Scotland's experience in offshore energy and said Scotland was keen to share it with Gujarat.

Patel said Gujarat is a leading state in India's renewable energy sector and has large offshore energy potential because of its long coastline. He suggested that a Gujarat delegation visit Scotland to study its work in the field.

Chief Secretary M. K. Das said the agreement would connect businesses, institutions and experts. Rajiv Topno, Acting Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries Department, said it would help build trust and partnerships in education, skills, sports and energy.

What happens next

The reports did not give financial figures, targets or a timeline for projects under the agreement. Lok Samna News will follow up as specific projects are announced.
